a symphony for all the senses

This weekend, my parents celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary (WOOT!) and Kelby and I celebrated with them by going to the Symphony in the Flint Hills outside of Kelby's hometown.

Alma's population of 832 had an influx of 7,500 concert goers for the weekend's event. Places like Chunky's Snack Shack, Deb's Cafe, the Alma Bakery, and Gambino's probably had to call in reinforcements just to cover the 24 hours of excitement.

Until Saturday, I had never considered the preservation of the plains much. However, I have always experienced a kind of longing while driving through the Flint Hills. I'd close my eyes and see myself just running over them. Running as far as I could and still being surrounded by lush, green fields and stretching, blue skies. The governor spoke before the concert. He noted that while mountains inspire awe, the prairie inspires peace, reflection, and strength of character.

While we listened to the sounds of the Kansas City Symphony playing Shenandoah the sun mingled with the breeze and all of a sudden I entered the world's concert hall. God's creation was making beautiful music that I experienced not only with my ears, but also with my eyes and heart.

We watched cowboys gallop across the prairie on their horses and were reminded of simpler times.

It was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life. That's what I think heaven must be like. Soul-touching music, blue skies, light breezes, green grass, and the people you love close to you.

  1. That concert really does look like an amazing time!! Kansas is beautiful. One question though, when you close your eyes while driving through the plains, is it you at the wheel? :P Remember when we (I) got lost and we had to detour through Peabody? haha...

    Congrats to the Swotparents!!!

  2. I do remember that and I practically never drive on road trips anymore- thanks to my hubbers. Anne asked me the other day what my first big road trip was and the only thing I could think of was our impromptu Newton Factory Outlet trip! LAME!
