Allergy Mama, Vol. I

Yesterday, I made my first trip to the hippie whole food store. Despite the hemp/incense smell, I found myself enjoying the little boutique/grocery store/beauty salon. I picked up my first cookbook tailored to families with food allergies.

Even though I say I "don't have time" for a milk allergy, the fact remains that my kid breaks out anytime the stuff touches his lips. So with his birthday fast approaching, I had to work quickly to find a dairy free and tasty frosting. I bought things like coconut flour, agave nectar, and "Better Than Milk" soy powder (gag). And just in case my homemade frosting fell through, I bought some organic frosting mixes for back up.

My dear sister got a recipe from a friend at work for soy milk frosting. Well, it called for coconut oil which I forgot to pick up at said hippie store. I figured it was no big deal because google suggested substituting with shortening.
BAD.
ADVICE.
FAIL:
Ricotta? you ask.
Cottage cheese? you ask.
Neither.
Just a bowl of SHAnastiness!

Take 2 came from the lovely cookbook above.

Success!
With a few little tweeks of my own aqui y alla the frosting was both edible AND semi attractive!

Maybe I will be able to handle this allergy thing after all.

p.s. Mel - It's not your fault that recipe sucked. Thanks for doing the research!

  1. Jack had a milk allergy too! I don't think his was as severe as Max's sounds. But, he has grown out of it, thank goodness. Silk was our very best friend until he was 2. He just started on skim milk and he's doing great. Good luck and GO YOU for trying to find recipes to cater to him. :) He'll appreciate it someday.

  2. I just started my "milk free" diet today to see if it helps the spitting up/eczema. Like you said about the soy milk (gag), I am really doing my best! Everything has milk in it!!!!!!! If you find some great ideas in your new book please share!
And happy birthday to Max!!!! You.have.a.one.year.old.
